Neighborhood Watch

Our Neighborhood Watch program is a volunteer-based effort to reduce the potential for crime in our community by discouraging criminals from selecting our residences, homes or vehicles as their targets.

Support Neighborhood Watch

Some key reasons to support our community's Neighborhood Watch program:

  • Communities with an active Neighborhood Watch program have up to 50% fewer crimes or suspicious events than those without Neighborhood Watch!

  • An active Neighborhood Watch can offset the potential for growth in crime as an area's population density increases - such as in western Fairfax County where we live.
  • As the word spreads that there is an active Neighborhood Watch program in a community, criminals are discouraged from plying their unlawful trade there.

Volunteers

Neighborhood Watch always needs and can use more volunteers to be an effective program.  You can volunteer in several capacities.  You can take part in formal patrols, always with a partner, by car, by bicycle, or by walking.  Currently we are equipped to do up to three patrols at the same time by car.  These patrols require identifying marking.  This is important so would-be criminals can see that the Watch is truly active.  Training is required. You can also participate informally (no training required) by all the above methods and also by watching from your home.  Contact the coordinator to volunteer or to get more information.

Training

Training is periodically presented by the Sully District Police Crime Prevention Specialists at the Sully District Police Station (4900 Stonecroft Boulevard, Chantilly).  Training is in the evening and is a two-hour session.  Upon completion the trainees receive a certificate.  Those who patrol as identifiable Neighborhood Watch participants must have this training.  All patrollers who receive this training should notify the coordinator so he will be aware that they can be scheduled to perform patrols.  Others may also attend these classes, as the information provided is of interest and useful to anyone.
